New Race
Title: The First and the Last - Company: WEA/Trafalgar (Aust)
Cat No: (768120) - Format: 12" lp / cass - Rel: Sept 1982 - Status: Deleted
This album documents a remarkable tour which took place in Australia in 1981, and witnessed the merging of elements of the MC5, Stooges, and Radio Birdman into a single project oriented "supergroup". Unlike many, this supergroup project was successful, yielding live performances of immense power.
The original lead vocals are great being raw and spontaneous. They can be heard on the Revenge New Race reissues. The fact that Rob insisted on redoing his vocals upset Deniz who liked the live version. To add insult to injury, the overdub process erased Deniz' original backing vocals. They then had to be reproduced by Clyde Bramley (who did a faithful rendering of them), Deniz being out of the country.

Title: Crying Sun - Company: Citadel (Australia) - Cat No: (cit 002)
Format: 7" single - Released: April 1983 - Status: Deleted
Rob Younger, an avid singles collector, had complained bitterly to Trafalgar that it was insulting that there was no single released from The First and the Last by WEA. Trafalgar licensed the rights to Citadel to shut him up!
Track Listing:
A-side: Crying Sun ( D Tek / W Gilbert )
B-side: Gotta Keep Movin' ( D Thompson )
The Musicians:
Rob Younger - Vocals
Deniz Tek - Guitar & Backing Vocals
Ron Asheton - Guitar
Warwick Gilbert - Bass
Dennis Thompson - Drums & Backing Vocals
Clyde Bramley - Backing Vocals on Crying Sun
Technical Details:
Produced by Charles Fisher, Rob Younger and Alan Thorne
Engineered by Alan Thorne
Mixed at Trafalgar Studios
Lead vocal overdubs recorded at Trafalgar Studios
Of Interest:
Ron Asheton plays the solos on Crying Sun, While Deniz
plays the solos on the MC5's Gotta Keep Movin',
highlighting the dual guitar interchange that was a hallmark
of the New Race shows.
Of interest to other avid singles collectors, the second
pressing of this single was done in different colors because
Rob Younger didn't like the pinkish tone on the front cover of
the first pressing which was supposed to be blood red.
The first pressing came with a folded black and white poster
inside, the second pressing did not.

Title: Hail Columbia - Company: Revenge (France) - Cat No: ss4-w/m106
Format: 7" single - Released: 1989 - Status: Deleted
This Revenge single was meant to complement their two-volume album set of New Race rough mixes obtained via Ron Asheton. The picture sleeve of this rare single is worth the price alone, depicting Soviet Red Army soldiers in full chemical gear against a background of flames and rockets.
This performance of Descent appears on the WEA Soldiers of Rock and Roll album but is a different mix. It is not found on any other New Race records.
Track Listing:
A-side: Hail Columbia ( New Race ) (3:58 m:s)

Title: First To Pay - Company: Revenge (France) - Cat No: wm118/mig9
Format: 12" lp / cd - Released: 1989 - Status: Deleted
The First To Pay appeared in 1989 as the first of a two album sequential set of French New Race releases. Revenge Records, mining a mother lode of Stooges/Sonics Rendezvous material by making the rounds of musicians in Detroit and Ann Arbor, came upon a set of cassettes which had been dubbed from unmixed 24 track master tapes, recorded during the New Race Australian tour in 1981.
These cassette copies of the master tapes, from which the "official" First & Last album was culled, were in the possession of Ron Asheton. Ron, who felt that the band had never been adequately compensated by the tour or official record release, was happy to release the tapes to Revenge. Hence the irony and triple entendre of the title.
Track Listing:
Smith and Wesson Blues ( D Tek ) (3:05 m:s)
Haunted Road ( D Tek ) (3:17 m:s)
Living World ( D Tek ) (3:10 m:s)

Columbia ( New Race ) (4:33 m:s)
These last two tracks are found on the CD only
The Musicians:
Rob Younger - Vocals / Deniz Tek - Guitar / Ron Asheton - Guitar / Warwick Gilbert - Bass
Dennis Thompson - Drums, Vocals / Chris Masuak - Guitar on tracks 11 & 12
Technical Details:
From a cassette of unmixed mobile 24 track masters / Recorded live at Sgt Peppers & Manly Vale Hotel, April/May 1981 / Produced by Charles Fisher / Compiled by Bernard Masanes
Of Interest:
The release of the tapes to make this album was hailed by some, since the original raw vocals are preserved and are considered by many to be compelling in their intensity. These had been overdubbed on the "official" First and Last album. Others, notably Rob Younger, condemned the release as he was not consulted and regards the release and his own performance as inferior. Michael McMartin from Trafalgar, understandably views this as a bootleg.
The album and CD feature great movie poster style cover art and the CD has a wonderful book of live photos in the inner sleeve. Both feature a long interview with Ron Asheton about New Race.

This is the second release of the New Race double set. For more details on the ill will surrounding its release consult the First To Pay discography page.
This album contains many performances not available elsewhere. Another wonderful album sleeve from the Revenge art department continues the tradition of famous Hollywood actors pinned down on a beach under heavy fire. Robert Mitchum features on this one.
