In 1999, Deniz and Angie began writing for a new Angie Pepper album, her first recording since 1981. Members of the Deniz Tek Group, Jim Dickson and Nik Rieth signed up for the job. Jim had been in Angie's previous band The Passengers, had written some of their best material, and sent some demos of new songs for the project.
Angie wrote almost all of the lyrics, and all the melodies. Rhythm tracks were recorded and produced by Dave Weyer in Montana. Nik came up with some novel rhythms, and experimented with combining live drums with looped break beats. Progress at Dave's was sure, but slow. Eventually several more tracks were recorded at GLEA Studios in Bozeman, again with Deniz on guitar but this time with the Donovans Brain rhythm section (Geoff Arntsen, bass; Ron Sanchez, keyboards; and Ron Craighead, drums) Dave Walker, of Savoy Brown and Fleetwood Mac fame, contributed stellar backing vocals on one track Moon. One last track, a cover of the Lipstick Killers' Hindu Gods of Love, was recorded at Brad Edwards home studio in Billings with Tony Horton on drums and Todd Eagle on bass and keyboards.
The tracks at Dave's studio were worked and reworked, using archived and found sounds and prepared guitar to forge new and startling sound paths. Some of these tracks had such complex aural layering that they required months to mix.
The album was finally released in 2003. A hybrid of straight up rock n roll/60's girl group production on the GLEA tracks is exemplified by the album opener Baby Don't Go, with the much more intricate and in depth production on the Weyer tracks being exemplified by the eternally haunting Cool Sea.
Res Ipsa Loquitor … The name means "It speaks for itself" … is a wonderful album, featuring to great advantage the world famous voice of Angie Pepper.
